Research is racing to help healthcare professionals further understand how periodontal disease is linked to cardiovascular disease. The American Academy of Periodontology acknowledges that periodontal disease is a significant risk factor for coronary artery disease. (CAD)
For years, the importance of good oral hygiene practices have been encouraged by dentists. The emphasis has been on keeping the mouth clean to reduce tooth loss and prevent bad breath. Research would suggest that this is but the tip of the iceberg, a dirty mouth may lead to heart disease!
Researchers admit that they don’t know the exact causal link between heart disease and gum disease but periodontitis seems to influence the occurrence and severity of coronary artery disease and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Camel Breath
Toxic Bite – 2002
None of us likes bad breath, yet we live with it, too afraid to visit the dentist. Most of us equate dentistry with pain, everyone has a bad story to tell! I’m the guy you wait to see as you flip through those National Geographic and Saga magazines in the waiting room, the cold knot of dread tightening in your stomach as you hear the endless whining of the drill from behind a closed door somewhere in the building. I am asking, is the fear worth having a heart attack over?
Some may say that just the thought of the dentist is enough to give anyone a heart attack, but seriously though, if you could improve your chances of survival by dropping in for a clean, wouldn’t you do it? If you knew that there were some dental products that really make a difference wouldn’t you use them? If you knew that some simple nutritional supplements could make all the difference, wouldn’t you take them?

A toothpaste that works and contains an active ingredient!
Anthium Dioxide has been shown to break down food films in the mouth that feed bacteria, viruses and micro-organisims which cause tooth decay and gum disease. It also helps prevent bad breath.Toothpaste containing this ingredient is a must for those serious about improving their oral and overal health!
Act Now
With arterial disease being one of the main causes of death worldwide, I felt that it was important this year to look at gum disease in more detail.
- What do we need to look for?
- What can you do and what can I do as a dentist to help you ?
- Is the cause bacterial, poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition or all of the above?
